The 701 Jail

The 701 Jail is located at 701 North San Jacinto Street just north of downtown Houston, Texas. Originally built as a five-story structure in the 1920’s to be a cold storage warehouse, the facility was gutted, two more floors were added and the new 701 Jail was opened in 1991.

Some Quick Facts
  • The 701 Jail contains 4,144 inmate beds located on seven housing floors.

  • Construction of the 701 Jail saved Harris County taxpayers approximately $21,000,000 dollars by using the existing cold storage warehouse.

  • The 701 Jail is designed as a “Direct Observation” facility where staff members continuously monitor the inmates twenty-four hours a day, seven days per week.

  • This type of construction provides for a safer environment for both inmates and staff and is less labor intensive, saving taxpayers in operating costs.

  • The 701 Jail’s administrative and managerial staff consists of:

    One Major
    One Captain
    Five Lieutenants
    Thirty-Nine Sergeants

  • The 701 Jail is staffed with approximately 600 sheriff's deputies and detention officers.
