| New Choices Substance Abuse Program
The Harris County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) New Choices Substance Abuse Program is partially funded by the Office of the Governor - Criminal Justice Division. New Choices provides various substance abuse treatment components and services to the inmates, both male and female, who are voluntarily admitted into the program and to court mandated inmates who meet substance abuse criteria.
The primary goals are to intervene in the cycle of chemical abuse to reduce recidivism. New Choices focus is on reducing substance abuse and criminal behavior. This program is a product of the vision and concern of the Harris County Sheriff's Office for the welfare of the community, it has provided the economic and moral support NEEDED to create a substance abuse department that is unique in correctional facilities and a model of its kind.
Provide an environment within the facility that supports recovery and recovery related issues.
Provide substance abuse education to assist the inmates in changing their behavior and attitude toward living a drug-free lifestyle.
Provide case management services to insure continuous care with all appropriate community based agencies that provide services to chemically dependent individuals.
Isolate inmates as much as possible from general population.
Inmates who have a drug abuse problem and who willingly are admitted into the program, are required to participate for 180 to 365 days. IF MANDATED BY COURT, THE amount of time is decided by the court at the time of sentencing, BUT MINIMUM TIME IS 180 DAYS.
Any inmate who does not have a high school diploma or GED will be required to attend the GED classes offered by the HCSO. Other classes such as, Office Practices, may be offered as well.
Each inmate is required to actively participate in all program activities, including participation in working within the facility. Any inmate who refuses to participate may be released to general population. IF COURT MANDATED,REPORT OF HIS/HER RELEASE FROM THE PROGRAM IS sent to the Community Supervision Officer and to the sentencing judge.
The successful completion of the program is based on the inmate's individual achievement. Their progress will be evaluated by staff members to identify problem and progress areas. Upon completion of the program, each inmate is then required to follow all aftercare recommendations made by the staff and IF NEEDED approved by the court.
