Auto Theft Unit

The Sheriff's Auto Theft Unit was created in March of 1993 through grant funds from the Texas Automobile Theft Prevention Authority(ATPA). Effective September 1, 2007, grant recipients received the added responsibility to investigate burglaries of motor vehicles. Consequently, the ATPA changed its name to the Automobile Burglary and Theft Prevention Authority (ABTPA).The Sheriff's Auto Theft Unit is charged with investigating all vehicle theft and burglaries of motor vehicles that occur in the unincorporated areas of Harris County. In addition the Unit regulates and enforces salvage laws, educates the public in auto theft/burglary prevention, and conducts insurance fraud investigations related to vehicle theft. It also conducts operations to disrupt and dismantle "auto theft rings", and other organized crime groups.
