The Homicide Unit's Mission Statement, Goal Motto reflect the importance the Harris County Sheriff's Office places on solving the murders of the people inside the jurisdiction of Harris County, Texas.
The Harris County Sheriff's Office Homicide Unit is committed to the pursuit of EXCELLENCE in all facets of our law enforcement mission. A thorough and timely investigation of all person's crimes reported to the Harris County Sheriff's Office will be conducted. At all times investigations will conform to the laws and constitution of the State of Texas and the United States. Uncompromising diligence and integrity will be adhered to in the never-ending quest to bring to justice those individuals responsible for injuring or murdering people inside the jurisdiction of the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

It is the goal of the Harris County Sheriff's Office Homicide Unit to successfully resolve every person's crime reported to the Harris County Sheriff's Office and bring to justice those individuals responsible for committing those crimes. All legal means available will be used to accomplish this goal.

The Homicide Unit of the Harris County Sheriff's Office is a part of the Person/Property Crimes Division of the Detective Bureau. It is a specialized unit that is responsible for the investigation of:
Homicide
Suicide
Infant Death
Accidental Death
Deaths of Questionable Nature
Officer Involved Shootings
Solicitation to Murder
Deadly Conduct

Though its responsibilities are many, as the name suggests the number one priority of the Homicide Unit is the successful and timely investigation of homicides. Nineteen investigators, 3 sergeants, 1 lieutenant and 2 clerks are assigned to the unit. The investigators are divided into 3 squads. The scene squads work all the new or "fresh" cases received by the unit and are on nighttime callout for a week at a time. The Cold Case Squad has 2 investigators and they work unsolved homicide cases that are three years old or older. Cold Case reports directly to the lieutenant. All investigators assigned to the Homicide Unit are selected on the basis of work ethic, investigative experience and skill, police experience and an expressed desire to work homicide cases.
Since its inception the Cold Case Squad has cleared twenty-two murder cases and 5 capital murder cases with charges filed. In addition to reviewing and investigating old Harris County cases, this squad spends many hours assisting out of county agencies with their new and old cases. They are also available to assist any in county agencies.
The Assault Squad and the Robbery Squad are included as part of the Homicide Unit. The Assault Squad consists of 1 sergeant, 9 investigators and 1 clerk. This squad investigates assault cases where the victim did not suffer life-threatening injuries. The Robbery Squad consist of 1 sergeant and eleven investigators. This squad investigates robbery cases where the victim did not suffer injuries that are likely to result in their death.
