Sheriff's Academy Rules

1. Class Attendance: No absences will be permitted unless excused by the Training Coordinator, or his designee, and then only if provisions for make-up exist. Tardiness will not be condoned and will be subject to make-up. Classes are subject to change without notice due to factors beyond our control. Supervisors will be notified when students do not report to class.

2. Meals: Meals are not provided on the Academy premises. Students who bring a lunch may eat in the Student Lounge or at the exterior covered area located adjacent to the multi-purpose training room. Snack and soft drink machines are located in the Student Lounge as are refrigerators and microwaves.

3. Dress: Departmental uniform or appropriate civilian attire only will be worn. No T-shirts with suggestive graphics or wording, sleeveless shirts, shorts, or overalls will be permitted. In order to easily identify them, only the Academy staff may wear the color red. Students shall be clean-shaven (as appropriate to duty assignment) and act as an example to Cadets attending the Basic Law Enforcement course.

4. Inmates: The inmate workers are assigned to the Academy for janitorial functions and as such receive their instructions from the Academy staff only. Students shall neither give to nor receive anything from these inmates.

5. Academics: All exams become the property of the Academy. No grades are published. The Class Coordinator will advise each class of the grading criteria used in that particular class. All written exams require a minimum score of 70% to be considered passing. Performance exams are graded on a Pass/Fail basis.

6. Parking: All students will utilize the designated Academy parking area. Do not park in reserved parking spaces. Overflow parking is available in the adjacent Lindsey Lyons Sports Complex.

7. Electronic Equipment: The use of photographic or recording equipment is strictly prohibited. Pagers and cellular telephones will be set on vibrate alert mode during classroom instruction. Except during an emergency, pager responses will be made during breaks only.

8. Telephones: Students will utilize the phones located in the Student Lounge. This phone is not to be used for incoming calls. All other phones are for the use of the Academy Staff only.

9. Smoking: Smoking is prohibited in all Harris County buildings. Students will use the designated smoking areas located in the tree-lined area at the front of the facility and at the south side of the building (off the classroom hallway). Benches and ashtrays are provided in these areas for your convenience.

10. Penalty: Violation of these rules shall be cause for dismissal. The Academy Director will have the final determination on all policy matters.
